Issue 08

It’s ten degrees here in Chicago. TEN degrees.

I just walked my dog without gloves and my fingertips feel as if I pressed them raw against a frozen metal pole.

Instead of slowly suffering through the pain of typing a long intro myself, I asked for an assist from Chat GPT. Specifically, in Hemingway’s tone of voice.

Here it is:

As the sun sets on clichés and rises on originality, join us in this literary adventure, where each word carries the weight of a lion's roar and every sentence is a masterful stroke of the pen.

Welcome to the realm of copywriting, where simplicity meets sophistication, and the craft of words takes center stage.

(I also asked it to write my intro in Rihanna’s tone of voice)

HEADLINE — SCHWANKE KASTEN

I’ll let Mark Ritson explain it:

“Pick an enemy. Position against them. Hard.”

This is a wildly entertaining way to grab someone’s attention. It plays with our assumptions. Calls out Timex. And, doesn’t overcomplicate the core pitch.

SENTENCE — VACATION SUNSCREEN

It’s not light. It’s lighter than air.

It doesn’t produce regular foam. It produces star-shaped mountains of foam.

If you want to write memorable copy, take an ordinary line and twist it into something the reader can visualize.

PARAGRAPH — EKOPEN

The hardest thing about writing copy? Restraint.

Too often, ads don’t give readers any credit. They over explain to get their message across.

This is a golden example of someone cutting out all the fluff and nailing what the consumer needs to know.

“LOOK FOR WHAT YOU NOTICE BUT NO ONE ELSE SEES.”
